Uneven Growth: Automation’s Impact on Income and Wealth Inequality (Econometrica. Moll et al. 2022)

上期回顾
In the previous session, we presented the theoretical framework of this paper, introducing a dissipation shock into the conventional household function and discussing five different settings of the dissipation shock. We derived the equilibrium and the expressions for the policy functions. By solving the aggregate function, we obtained the supply and demand curves for capital and established Proposition 1 of this paper: as the degree of automation deepens, the return to wealth is an increasing function of the share of capital.
本期预告
We will continue to derive the impact of automation on wages. By decomposing the Solow residual, we find that an increase in the degree of automation reduces wage income. Under the assumption that wealth and income distributions follow a Pareto distribution, we solve for the wealth and income distribution functions and conclude that as the degree of automation increases, wealth distribution becomes more unequal. Furthermore, after extending the model, we obtain additional conclusions.
