内容简介
This body of work begins with Austen-Smith & Banks (ASB, 2000), who augment the classic Crawford-Sobel cheap talk model by allowing senders to use costly, dissipative signals ("money burning"). ASB initially argued that money burning could not only improve information transmission, enabling full separation, but could also make cheap talk influential even when it would otherwise fail.
However, a critical note by Kartik (2007) refines these findings. Kartik identifies an error in an ASB proof and demonstrates that while money burning can enhance precision, it cannot create influential cheap talk from scratch. He proves that influential cheap talk exists with money burning if and only if it exists without it, fundamentally clarifying the relationship between these two signaling mechanisms.
